The term affordable housing conjures many images, but the most important one should be that workforce housing serves our first responders, teachers, nurses, service sector workers, fire personnel, and police among others.
Justice Park, on the block bounded by King, Wilmington, Prince and Harrington streets, is proposed as a workforce housing community with a minimum of 39 units. Providing homes for people whose incomes range from 50% to 100% of Area Median Income in Beaufort County — $76,000 for a family of four — is critical and has been identified in a number of studies. It is equally important to make these homes consistent architecturally with the Northwest Quadrant, and toward that end Allison Ramsey Architects has worked and will continue to work with Beaufort Historic District Review Board to finalize the design.
Construction is expected to begin once the employees in the DHEC building at 600 Wilmington St. are relocated to a new facility and that building is demolished. We expect construction to start in mid-2023 and be completed in early 2024.
